Fraud Scheme Reminds Business and Consumers of the Need for Web Protection
Stay Safe: The Urgent Need for WordPress Virus Removal and Security
In recent news, a man from California, Allen Giltman, was sentenced to seven years in prison due to his critical role in a multi-million-dollar scam. This scam led to monetary loss for over 50 individuals and organizations, highlighting the vital importance of frequent WordPress vulnerability scans and fixing WordPress malware immediately.
Giltman, 59, along with various co-conspirators, erected a vast fraudulent network comprising more than 150 counterfeit websites. These websites were designed to impersonate genuine financial institutions with impressive fidelity.
The criminals used websites such as saddleriveradvisors[dot]net and sra-llc[dot]com, deceiving visitors into believing they were interacting with the legitimate financial institution, Saddle River Advisors.
This scheme was highly sophisticated, with the perpetrators utilizing search engines like Google and Microsoft Bing to lure unsuspecting victims. Once on the fraudulent site, these victims were lured by promises of above-average return rates on a variety of investment opportunities.
Contacting what they believed to be a legitimate financial institution via email or phone would lead them directly to Giltman, their soon-to-be con-man.
Giltman would then pose as real FINRA broker-dealers, fabricating investment records of the victim’s funds supposedly invested in “private lending opportunities.” In truth, these funds were redirected to bank accounts worldwide, including Russia, Georgia, Hong Kong, and Turkey.
This elaborate scheme is believed to have defrauded over 70 people, leading to the theft of approximately US $50 million. Tragically, many victims were elderly citizens who had invested their retirement savings.
Despite Giltman’s attempts to cover his digital tracks with encrypted messaging apps, VPNs, prepaid cell phones, and gift cards used to register website domains, he was ultimately brought to justice.
The court ordered Giltman to forfeit around US $100,000 in addition to various valuable items such as pieces of jewelry and luxury watches. He was also sentenced to 87 months in prison for his crimes.
This case underscores the importance of WordPress virus removal and WordPress vulnerability scans to guard businesses and individuals against similar cybercrimes. Both organizations and investors are reminded to register domains similar to their official websites to prevent impersonation by malicious parties, and to always verify the legitimacy of an investment website through WHOIS lookups and regulatory databases cross-checks.
